Using the Call to Action to Change the Culture in Your Community on Underage Drinking and Alcohol-Related Driving

Last year the US Surgeon General issued the Call to Action to Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking. This was a significant milestone in the fight to prevent a serious public heath and safety issue facing our young people and their families. Learn more about how your community can use the Call to Action to work together with parents, educators, community officials, advocates, and youth in a coordinated effort to prevent underage drinking and its negative consequences. Presenters will identify other resources that can help you in this effort.

New Technology Applications to Improve Teen Driving

This workshop will focus on new technologies being tested in the field to improve teen driving skills, and examples of technology applications.

Understanding Adolescent Development and How It Impacts Teen Drivers

Bodies and brains continue to develop through the teen years and beyond. Learn about the growing knowledge and understanding of adolescent development and what this process means to efforts to keep teen drivers safe.

How do we Get Parents More Involved in Keeping Their Kids Safe in Motor Vehicles?

A growing body of research shows that parents have greater influence over their children's behavior than they realize. This is the case for toddlers, booster seat kids, tweens and teens. It is equally important in addressing beginning drivers issues, underage drinking and occupant restraint use.

Community Efforts to Reduce Teen Crashes

Communities across the country have taken a range of approaches in addressing teen crashes. This session will highlight several of these programs, providing examples of successes and discussing challenges.

How Can we Increase Teen Belt Use?

Local programs to increase seat belt use will be discussed. Preliminary results of demonstration programs to increase teen belt use in Wisconsin and Tennessee will be presented.

Youth Panel - Addressing Youth Traffic Safety in Their Communities

This youth panel will consist of youth representatives from SADD, NOYS and the local Portland area. The panel will discuss the youth perspective on major traffic safety issues including GDL, drivers ed, underage drinking, cellphones and seatbelt use. It will also discuss how best to reach youth with safety-related messages.

Judicial Panel on Effectiveness of the Judiciary in Reducing Underage Drinking

The panel will share their judicial experiences with underage drinking, how the public can support the judiciary in these efforts, and offer suggestions on how the judiciary can use or apply the recommendations of the US Surgeon General's Call to Action To Prevent and Reduce Underage Drinking. Best practices from states and communities will be presented (i.e. sting operations).

Community Response to Underage Drinking

This workshop will provide local communities, particularly law enforcement, with effective strategies for successfully investigating liquor law violations and how to create standard operating procedures on underage drinking party patrols and dispersals, and work effectively with the media to publicize their enforcement efforts. Successful state and community efforts will be highlighted.

What's New in Novice Teen Driver Public Policy?

Many government and elected officials are leading the charge to improve teen driver safety. Improving state graduated driver licensing systems is one popular step that they have advocated. What else are they coming up? This session will highlight the experiences and recommendations of state teen driver task forces, as well as providing a briefing on the latest trends in graduated driver licensing legislation.

How Should we be Teaching Our Kids to Drive?

Presenters from key national driver education organizations will discuss how driver education should be taught and monitored in states and communities. The presenters will also cover the role of parents in driver education. An update on NHTSA research and programs will also be provided.
