Occupant Protection for Children Track Workshop Descriptions
Occupant Protection for Children (OPC) in the Hispanic Community
Current data show that Hispanic children are overrepresented in crash statistics. Speakers will address programs that were designed to reach the Hispanic community with safety information and programs.
Reaching Tweens with Safety Messaging
Learn about new research initiatives and program elements designed to reach older children (some who are not yet teens) with safety messaging. Hear results from the NHTSA Tween study that was conducted in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and from Safe Kids as they report preliminary findings from research conducted in early 2008 in preparation for CPS Week 2008 programming.
Making Progress with Booster Seats
In an effort to increase booster seat use, the CDC funded a cooperative agreement with the State of Michigan to improve booster seat use in select communities. The purpose was to tailor, implement and evaluate community-based interventions with demonstrated effectiveness. Speakers will address findings of the study and parental attitudes toward booster seat use. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will discuss findings relative to older children who move from booster seats to safety belts.
Manufacturer's Workshop Session 1 (repeated workshop)
Child restraint manufacturers will have an opportunity to highlight new product features and designs. Attendees will be invited to the exhibit hall for details.
Manufacturer's Workshop Session 2 (repeated workshop)
This workshop provides an opportunity for manufacturers to highlight new product changes or designs. Each manufacturer will talk about some key features and will invite attendees to their booths for details.
Program Evaluation: Don't Skip This Step
Evaluating a community program does not have to be painful and costly to provide great information for growth and enhancements. Learn from those who use design and program evaluation to measure program success and design ways to improve outcomes and future programs.
Protecting Children In and Around Cars
This workshop provides an update on national efforts to combat the increasing problem of unattended children left in vehicles and children injured or killed in vehicle back overs. Are we as a nation too distracted to see small children? Are there laws, new technologies or programs that can increase driver awareness about the vehicle safety needs of our smallest occupants and pedestrians?
Enhancing the Classroom Experience: Instructors and Instructor Candidates
Come to this session to hear and share some suggestions for making your classes more interesting and successful. Open to certified CPS instructors and instructor candidates.
Healthcare Professionals and Occupant Protection for Children: A Much Needed Partnership
Learn about new tactics used by medical professionals to inform colleagues of critical OPC information, how policies are made at the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other ways to provide physician continuing education.
OPC and Transporting Children with Special Health Care Needs
Learn how hospitals that offer Special Needs Loaner programs are selected and evaluated in Florida as the program grows to accommodate more children. Hear from Riley Hospital to learn how certified technicians can incorporate OPC for children with special health care needs into car seat checkup events, provide assistance related to "other vehicles," and increase awareness of medical professionals learning about special transportation issues for the first time.
Outreach and OPC in the Community
Community programs keep OPC messages in the forefront of the public's eye at the local level. Hear about a successful school program, a program targeted to Social Service and Childcare workers and a CPS Team continuing education initiative.
Anchor, Tether, LATCH: An Update
Vehicles and child restraints have been equipped with LATCH since September 2002 - almost six years - yet research shows that caregivers are less likely to use the system as a whole or in part. Hear industry leaders discuss progress between the vehicle and child restraint manufacturers to standardize weight limits of tether and lower anchors. Learn more about NHTSA's public information campaign to promote tether and lower anchor use with the public.
Innovative Programming For Diverse OPC Audiences
This one-hour session will examine how needs were evaluated and programs designed to target diverse and low income populations.
