Data and Research Track Workshop Descriptions
New Booster Seat Research
A first of its kind survey of booster seat use, combined with the results of other recent research, provides new insights into the effectiveness of efforts to get children who have outgrown child safety seats into belt-positioning booster seats.
Using Data Collection to Strengthen Research Projects
The backbone of any research project or new safety program starts with good data collection and analysis. This workshop will provide training on how to utilize NHTSA's recently revised National Center for Statistics and Analysis website to provide new tools for researchers and program managers on collecting fatality data for their state or community.
New Child Passenger Safety Research
Why are some children still riding unrestrained? What types of injuries are occurring to restrained children in crashes? Leading researchers provide answers based on the newest research on child safety in motor vehicles.
New Vehicle Safety Systems, Active and Passive
New safety systems are entering the vehicle market or will soon do so. Learn more about them from the manufacturers developing and promoting them at this session, a perennial favorite among Lifesavers attendees.
Sound Science vs. Flawed Research - Theory and Examples
Unsubstantiated anecdotes, urban legends and flawed research have long been the basis for misleading claims about crash causation, injury mechanics and countermeasures. The Internet has provided a new avenue for information to be spread broadly and quickly. Speakers will address some of the most common assertions and talk about how you can more effectively separate the good from the not-so-good.
New Teen and Novice Driver Research
Researchers will discuss new survey data on parental and general public attitudes towards expanded/extended GDL provisions, a study of passenger restrictions and crashes, hazard perception among teen drivers, and how parents might better supervise driving by their newly-licensed teens.
Older Driver Research
As the population ages, seniors will comprise an increasingly larger proportion of drivers. New research on older drivers will highlight trends and crash risks for older drivers, a novel approach for examining the crash risk of older drivers, and an evaluation of an older driver improvement program.
Distracted Driving Research
Evidence is mounting that cell phones and other in-vehicle gadgets present a major safety problem and it's not clear what can be done. Learn about the latest research on what types of telematics are most distracting, and the effects of cell phone laws on young drivers.
Speed and Automated Enforcement Research
The roles of speed in crash causation and severity are well documented and speeds driven have been steadily increasing. Several recent studies have focused on the role of speed in crashes and on automated speed enforcement programs. This workshop will discuss these research activities.
Motorcycle Safety Research
This workshop will describe several recent studies and papers on motorcycle safety including a University of Minnesota study of motorcyclist impairment at varying dosing levels, an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study of crash involvement by motorcycle type and a NHTSA study of non-compliant motorcycle helmets.
