What Real ID Means to You and Other Licensing Issues

The Real ID Act has resulted in a number of issues that are being addressed by individual states around the country. Because each state’s department of motor vehicles or licensing division has unique rules and approaches, questions regarding Real ID continue to require consideration and decision making for the states. This workshop will address Real ID issues that will include: what the Real ID Act is, when it becomes effective, and the potential impact for individual states.

Traffic Incident Management – Implications for Highway Safety

The National Unified Goal encourages state and local transportation and public safety agencies to adopt unified, multi-disciplinary policies, procedures and practices that will dramatically improve the way traffic incidents are managed on U.S. roadways. This workshop will discuss the NUG and will include the benefits associated with consistent approaches to managing traffic incidents in a manner designed to reduce congestion and enhance responder safety and identifying resources to assist with implementation.

Multi-Jurisdictional Enforcement Efforts – Myth or Fact?

Multi-jurisdictional efforts to interdict impaired driving, and conduct seat belt, work zone and speed enforcement are effective methods for maximizing localized high visibility enforcement activities. Through the pooling of resources, law enforcement agencies can make significant impacts on traffic safety. This workshop will discuss multi-jurisdictional efforts that include: providing examples of effective programs and providing guidance on developing effective multi-jurisdictional efforts.

Police Pursuits – Policies and Practice

Police pursuits present significant risks to law enforcement officers and the general public, and have the potential for personal and organizational liability to law enforcement agencies. This workshop will discuss the issues associated with police pursuits, including discussion of current trends associated with police pursuits and a review of recent court decisions that impact law enforcement regarding pursuits.

Everything You Wanted to Know About DWI Courts, But Were Afraid to Ask!

Dedicated DWI courts have been shown to be an effective countermeasure to impaired driving recidivism. Combining the appropriate resources and staffing can lead to credible results in making a positive impact on repeat offenders. This workshop will address DWI court issues: how DWI courts work, what locations and jurisdictions may be eligible, obtaining support and guidance in establishing and maintaining DUI courts.

Drug Impaired Driving Enforcement and Prosecution

The identification and interdiction of drug impaired driving continues to be a significant issue for law enforcement and prosecutors. Driving behaviors that may initially reflect intoxication can be the result of drug impairment, which requires a higher degree of training and expertise to properly identify. This workshop will address the issue of drug impaired driving along with the current issues associated with drug impaired driving.

Impaired Driving Technology – A Criminal Justice Perspective

The application of ignition interlocks and continuous alcohol monitoring devices are among the tools available to the judiciary to address and potentially prevent recurrence of impaired driving. This workshop provides the perspective of key members of the criminal justice system – representatives of prosecution, the judiciary and probation – about the use of these technologies, their benefits and limitations, and the logistical issues associated with them.

What is an EDR and What Does it Mean to You?

The information contained on the electronic data recorder (EDR) in a vehicle can provide important information about the conditions existing just before a crash. This evolution of technology presents law enforcement and prosecutors with new issues and challenges associated with the lawful seizure of the EDR devices, and obtaining the data contained on them.

People's Court: DWI Mock Trial

Mock trials are an effective tool for providing law enforcement and prosecutors with experience in case presentation, and obtaining feedback and guidance for improving their trial performance. The goal of this workshop will be to allow law enforcement and prosecutors to observe and comment upon the presentation of testimony in a DWI case.

Speed remains a significant factor in crashes, injuries and fatalities on America's roadways. As a result, this workshop is designed to address speed interdiction and speed management issues on all types of roadways including enforcement programs in work zones.

Officers who are well trained and qualified as expert witnesses often face lengthy and detailed cross examination. Defense counsel often seek to impeach the expert testimony or diminish the impact of their testimony. This workshop will assist law enforcement in case preparation and presentation skills.

Ethical Considerations for Prosecutors and Law Enforcement

Potential problems exist from a variety of ethical issues which may develop throughout a criminal case. These issues can have a negative impact on the arrest, prosecution, case preparation and presentation. This workshop will address and identify potential ethical issues or conflicts and ways to avoid or resolve them.
