High visibility enforcement mobilizations combine publicity and enforcement efforts to multiply their safety impact. Yet the annual series of mobilizations takes energy to keep police, news media, and others engaged. This session brings together speakers from various disciplines to discuss how they effectively manage mobilizations across drunk driving, seat belt enforcement, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and other safety issues.
Passing Primary Seat Belt Laws: Lessons From 2009's Successes
Four states passed primary enforcement seat belt laws in 2009 -- the most ever to pass improve their laws in one year. In this roundtable discussion, representatives from all four states will discuss and answer questions about what worked and didn't work in getting these important lifesaving measures enacted.
Paving the Way for Stronger Seat Belt Laws: Signage and Local Ordinances
Primary belt laws and high visibility enforcement are two of the more prominent ways to increase belt use. Local ordinances and increased roadway signage have also proven to be successful measures to increase belt use. Hear from one community that has passed and enforced a local primary seat belt ordinance. Also hear from researchers who have evaluated the successful use of signage (billboards, movable signs, portable electronic signs, etc.) for community enforcement programs.
